D'Addario EJ27N student nylon classical guitar strings, three-set pack

The short version

The Student series is the teaching-room string: the same construction as Pro-Arte - clear nylon trebles, silver-plated copper basses on a multifilament core, normal tension - held to a looser sorting tolerance and priced accordingly. In a guitar class, where strings get broken by beginners learning to tie them on and nobody is listening for a slightly false third string, that is exactly the right trade. Three sets to a pack.

What it gets right

  • Three sets at roughly the price of one premium set
  • Same basic construction as Pro-Arte, at a student price
  • Normal tension, so nothing about a standard classical setup changes
  • A forgiving purchase while you are still learning to tie strings on

Where it gives ground

  • Looser sorting tolerance than Pro-Arte, most audible on the third string
  • Basses go dull sooner than the premium sets
  • Tie-end only, and not for any steel-string guitar

What owners report

Patterns drawn from published owner reviews. Summarised, never quoted.

What comes up most

  • Bought overwhelmingly by teachers and parents, who cite the price per set
  • Owners note they are perfectly good for practice and lessons

Frequent complaints

  • Experienced players report the third string can intonate imperfectly
  • Some find the bass strings dull faster than expected

Recognised strengths

  • An enormous number of owner reports for a student-grade product, and they agree

Recognised weaknesses

  • Not intended for a serious instrument, and does not pretend to be

The verdict

Buy these if you teach, if you are learning, or if you are about to break several sets working out how a classical bridge ties. The looser sorting is audible only if you are listening for it, and mostly on the third string, which is the hardest one for any maker to get right. For a student instrument or a first classical guitar the three-pack is straightforwardly the sensible purchase. If you have a good classical guitar and play it seriously, spend the extra on Pro-Arte.
