An out-of-tune guitar teaches your ear the wrong thing, and a beginner cannot yet hear that it is wrong. A clip-on tuner reads the vibration of the wood rather than the sound in the room, so it works in a noisy house and it works on an unplugged electric. This is the single accessory nobody should skip.
