Nut width
A traditional Precision neck measures around 1.65 inches at the nut and is genuinely wide. Most modern budget basses, including the one recommended here, use a slimmer 1.625-inch profile closer to a Jazz Bass. If you are coming from guitar, or you have smaller hands, the narrower neck is worth seeking out specifically.
Scale length
Thirty-four inches is standard and what almost every teaching resource assumes. A short-scale bass at 30 to 32 inches is a legitimate choice for younger or smaller players and has a distinctive rounder tone, but it is a deliberate choice rather than a default.
Pickup layout
A PJ layout is the most useful first configuration because it teaches you what both classic bass sounds are for. A plain Precision is simpler and completely valid. A Jazz Bass is brighter and slimmer-necked. Any of the three will do; what you should avoid is an unbranded active circuit at the very bottom of the market, where the preamp usually adds noise rather than control.
