SAPHUE microfibre string cleaner being drawn along guitar strings

The short version

Strings do not usually die of corrosion, they die of what gets packed into the windings - sweat, skin oil and dead skin, which damp the string and flatten the harmonics. Wiping them after every session is the single most effective thing anyone can do about it, and it costs nothing. This is a microfibre pad on a handle that wraps around the strings so you can run it up the neck in one pass, cleaning above and below the strings at once, which a cloth in your hand does not.

What it gets right

  • Cleans above and below the strings in one pass
  • Meaningfully extends string life if used after every session
  • Washable and reusable rather than a consumable
  • Costs less than a single set of strings

Where it gives ground

  • A folded microfibre cloth does nearly as much for free
  • Cannot reach grime already packed inside the windings
  • No published material composition

What owners report

Patterns drawn from published owner reviews. Summarised, never quoted.

What comes up most

  • Owners report a noticeable extension in string life when used consistently
  • The one-pass design is preferred over a loose cloth
  • Very frequently bought alongside strings

Frequent complaints

  • Some owners report the pad wearing quickly
  • A minority say it does little that a cloth does not
  • Occasional reports of it catching on a wound string

Recognised strengths

  • Encourages the one habit that most extends string life

Recognised weaknesses

  • The tool is a convenience; the habit is what does the work

The verdict

Genuinely worthwhile, though it is worth being clear that the tool is a convenience and the habit is the actual benefit - a folded microfibre cloth achieves nearly as much for nothing. It will not resurrect a dead set, and no wipe reaches the underside of a winding once grime is packed in. SAPHUE publishes no material composition beyond the word microfibre, so as with any unbranded cleaning product it is worth trying it on the back of the headstock before dragging it across a satin neck.

We do not publish prices, because Amazon prices change constantly and a stale figure helps nobody. Follow the link for the current price and availability.
