Traveler Guitar EG-1 Deluxe in Gold-Top, full front view showing the headless neck and in-body tuners

The short version

Travel guitars usually shorten the scale, and shortening the scale is what makes them feel wrong. The EG-1 Deluxe does the opposite: it keeps the full 24.75-inch scale and 21 frets and removes the headstock instead, moving all six tuners into the body. The result is 28.5 inches long and 4 lb 4 oz — around a quarter shorter and roughly half the weight of a normal electric — while the distance between any two frets is identical to the guitar you already own. Under the gold top is African mahogany with a carved face, a mahogany bolt-on neck, a black walnut board with a flat 15.75-inch radius, and a single full-size humbucker through volume and tone into a standard jack.

The good and the bad

What we like

  • Full 24.75-inch scale and standard fret spacing, so nothing has to be relearned
  • 4 lb 4 oz and 28.5 inches long, small enough for hand luggage
  • Full-size humbucker rather than a miniature substitute
  • Tune-o-matic roller bridge and in-body tuners are a genuinely stable arrangement

What we do not

  • A small body means limited sustain and a thin low end compared with a full-size electric
  • One pickup and two controls: there is a single voice and no switching
  • No built-in headphone amplifier, so an amp or interface is still needed
  • Almost no owner reviews yet on this 2025 revision

What owners and reviewers report

This listing has 2 Amazon ratings — not enough written feedback for us to identify reliable patterns. We will fill this section in when there is something real to summarise.

The verdict

This is a well-judged compromise rather than a compromised guitar. Because the scale and fret spacing are unchanged, muscle memory transfers completely — the thing that makes most travel guitars frustrating simply does not apply. The full-size humbucker is a real pickup rather than a miniature, so it drives an amp or an interface convincingly. What you give up is body mass and therefore sustain and low-end weight; a small solid body will never ring like a full-size one, and the single pickup means there is exactly one voice available. Note also that this is a passive guitar with no built-in headphone amp, so a practice amp or an interface is still required. Judged as an instrument for hotel rooms, sofas and hand luggage, it does what it claims.

Strings for this guitar

All strings

It ships with D'Addario EXL110 (.010-.046). Staying at that gauge keeps the setup and the neck relief as the factory left them; going a step lighter makes bending easier, a step heavier gives more volume and tension. Anything more than one step either way usually needs the truss rod and the intonation adjusted.
