Yamaha BB234 bass guitar in Yellow Natural Satin, full front view

The short version

The BB has been in the Yamaha catalogue since 1977 and has quietly ended up under a lot of records, which is what Yamaha means when it calls it the hardest-working bass in the business. The 234 is the entry to the line and keeps the parts that matter: an alder body rather than the basswood usual at this price, a bolt-on maple neck, and the PJ pickup pairing — a V3 split single-coil in the Precision position for weight, a V3 single-coil at the bridge for bite, with independent volumes and a master tone. The detail worth noticing is the nut: 1.575 inches, narrower than a Squier Affinity PJ and considerably narrower than a traditional Precision. Combined with a fairly round 250 mm fingerboard radius, that makes it one of the more approachable four-string necks available, particularly for guitarists doubling on bass or for players with smaller hands.

The good and the bad

What we like

  • Alder body rather than the basswood usual at this price
  • Narrow 1.575-inch nut makes it unusually approachable, especially for guitarists
  • PJ layout with independent volumes covers Precision weight and Jazz bite
  • Part of a line with a genuine track record rather than a budget-only design

What we do not

  • Ceramic V3 pickups sound harder and more modern than alnico equivalents
  • Vintage-style bridge and open-gear tuners are basic
  • Passive only, with no onboard preamp
  • Around 8.8 lb, so not a light bass

What owners and reviewers report

Patterns we found across published reviews and owner feedback. These are summaries of recurring themes — we do not reproduce or invent individual testimonials.

What comes up most

  • The neck is the most praised feature, with owners repeatedly describing it as fast and comfortable relative to other four-strings
  • Build quality and finish are reported as a clear step above entry-level basses
  • The PJ pickup pairing is valued for covering a wide range without an active circuit

Frequent complaints

  • Some owners find the ceramic pickups brighter and less warm than they expected from a P-style bass
  • The stock strings and basic bridge are named as the usual first upgrades

Recognised strengths

  • Long-standing reputation for reliability, which is the reason the BB line has survived since 1977

Recognised weaknesses

  • Only 66 Amazon ratings on this finish, so owner consensus is drawn from a modest sample

The verdict

Alder rather than basswood, a genuinely narrow neck and the most useful pickup layout in bass, at a price that sits just above the entry tier. The BB234 is what you buy when the Squier Affinity is not quite enough instrument but a Fender is more than you want to spend — the build is a clear step up, the hardware is plain but honest, and the V3 pickups are ceramic rather than alnico, which shows as a slightly harder, more modern voice. There is no active preamp and no five-string in this model, and the vintage-style bridge is functional rather than clever. As a first serious bass, or as a reliable backup, it is very hard to fault.
