The short version
The FG830 is the FG800 with the one upgrade that actually changes the sound: rosewood back and sides instead of nato. Rosewood is denser and more reflective, and what you hear is a deeper low end and a spread of overtones above the note that laminated nato simply cannot produce — the reason rosewood has been the premium acoustic tonewood since the nineteenth century. Above it sits the same solid spruce top, braced with Yamaha's scalloped pattern: thinning the braces lets the top move more freely, which is where the extra volume and low-mid response come from. The scale is 650 mm, slightly longer than the FG800J, which puts marginally more tension on the strings and tightens the attack. Everything else is standard Yamaha discipline — 43 mm nut, 400 mm fingerboard radius, gloss body and matte neck.

The good and the bad
What we like
- Rosewood back and sides at this price, which is where the extra depth and overtones come from
- Solid spruce top with scalloped bracing, so it will keep opening up with playing
- The longer 650 mm scale gives a tighter, more defined attack than the shorter FG800J
- Yamaha's usual factory setup quality — playable out of the box
What we do not
- Back and sides are laminated rosewood, not solid
- No cutaway and no electronics
- Basic nut and saddle material, the obvious first upgrade
- Yamaha does not publish a fret count for this model, so we leave that field empty

What owners and reviewers report
Patterns we found across published reviews and owner feedback. These are summaries of recurring themes — we do not reproduce or invent individual testimonials.
What comes up most
- The rosewood back and sides are the most cited reason owners choose it over the cheaper FG800
- Reviewers describe a louder, stronger low-to-mid response, which is what the scalloped bracing is for
- Value for money dominates the feedback, as it does across the FG range
Frequent complaints
- As with the rest of the range, the nut, saddle and factory strings are named as the first things to replace
- Some owners report needing a setup despite Yamaha's generally good factory work
Recognised strengths
- Treated in published reviews as the sweet spot of the FG line: the biggest jump in tone for the smallest jump in price
Recognised weaknesses
- Still a dreadnought without a cutaway, so upper-fret work stays awkward
The verdict
This is where the Yamaha acoustic line stops being a compromise. For roughly a hundred dollars over an FG800 you get rosewood back and sides, and on a solid-top guitar that is a genuinely audible upgrade rather than a spec-sheet one — more depth underneath, more shimmer on top, and a longer sustain. It stays a laminate back and sides, so it will not turn into a Martin, and there is no cutaway and no pickup. But as the guitar to buy when a beginner has decided they are staying, or as a knockabout second acoustic for someone who owns something far more expensive, it is very hard to argue against.
