The short version
A moulded polyethylene shell is a different category of object from a padded bag. The plastic is rigid enough to spread an impact across the whole shell rather than transmitting it to the point of contact, the foam interior is cut to hold a Stratocaster or Telecaster body so the instrument cannot move inside, and the centre latch takes a TSA-approved lock. Fender specifies the shell as ATA military-grade, which is a description of the polyethylene rather than a certification of the finished case.

What it gets right
- Rigid moulded shell genuinely protects against impact, unlike any bag
- Foam interior is cut to shape, so the guitar cannot shift in transit
- TSA-approved locking latch, which matters if it ever flies
- Fender's own case, so the fit on a Strat or Tele is exact
Where it gives ground
- Heavy and bulky compared with a gig bag
- Shape-specific: it will not take an offset or a wide body
- No backpack straps, so it is a one-hand carry only
- Costs more than a lot of the guitars in this catalogue
Who it is for
What owners report
Patterns drawn from published owner reviews. Summarised, never quoted.
What comes up most
- Protection and fit are what owners consistently praise
- The latch and hardware quality are frequently mentioned
Frequent complaints
- Weight is the most common complaint
- Some owners report the fit being tight on a thicker-bodied Telecaster
- A minority report latch alignment issues out of the box
Recognised strengths
- Very consistent reports that it does the one thing a case must do
Recognised weaknesses
- It is heavy, and there is no way around that in a moulded case
The verdict
Worth it when the instrument's value or its irreplaceability passes the price of the case, and it is the right buy if the guitar travels by car regularly, gets stored in a loft or garage, or ever goes in a plane hold. The compromise is that it is heavy and bulky in a way a gig bag is not, and the fit is shape-specific: a Strat or Tele sits perfectly, an offset or a wide-bodied guitar will not fit at all. Check the shape of your guitar against the interior before ordering.
