The short version
The Prelude line is Gretsch's beginner tier, and the D100 is the plain dreadnought in it. Everything about the construction points the same way: a laminated basswood top over laminated basswood back and sides, a nato neck, a walnut board, and a satin finish over the lot. Laminate is not an accident here — a laminated top does not care much about humidity swings or being left leaning against a radiator, which is exactly the failure mode that kills cheap solid-top guitars owned by beginners. The specification that actually affects playing is the 12-inch fingerboard radius, flatter than the traditional acoustic curve and easier on a hand that is still learning to fret cleanly.

The good and the bad
What we like
- All-laminate construction shrugs off humidity and temperature changes that damage solid tops
- 12-inch fingerboard radius is flatter and more forgiving than a traditional acoustic board
- Synthetic bone nut rather than plastic, which is unusual at this price
- Satin black finish is far better at hiding handling marks than a gloss natural
What we do not
- A laminated top does not develop or open up with playing time
- Quiet and even rather than resonant, with limited dynamic range
- No electronics, so it needs a microphone or a pickup fitted to be amplified
- Gretsch does not publish a full specification sheet for the Prelude line, so some details come from dealers

What owners and reviewers report
This listing has 60 Amazon ratings — not enough written feedback for us to identify reliable patterns. We will fill this section in when there is something real to summarise.
The verdict
Judge this on durability rather than tone and it makes sense. A laminated top will never open up the way a solid spruce top does over years of playing, and the D100 sounds accordingly: even, quiet, and short on the bloom and sustain that make a good dreadnought worth hearing. What you get instead is a guitar that tolerates a car boot, a cold room and a distracted teenager. If the guitar will live in one place and be played daily, a solid-top dreadnought at a slightly higher price will reward the extra money quickly. If it needs to be a knockabout, this is a sensible choice, and the black satin finish hides the marks it will collect.
